Miss M. Hutchins was appointed clerk to tho Wuodvillc County Council on Saturday afternoon. There were six applicants for tho position.'
Mr C. R. Henry, of Newman, has received word to the effect that he has passed his medical examination for the position of Sergeant Instructor in tho New Zealand 'Defence- Force. Mr Henry, who takes up his duties on Ist May, has been posted to the. "A ' squadron (Gisbornc).
On Friday last tho "residents of the ihuraua Valley assembled in force au tho local hall, tho occasion being _ a presentation and farewell social to Mivs .Pattle, who having held the position of school teacher there for a number of years, is leaving to take up a similar'position at Norman-dale. Tho presentation, which consisted of a lady's companion from the residents, and a gold brooch from the school children, was made by Mr H. J. Dagg. Chairman'of the School Committee, who, on behalf of tho settlers, expressed regret at Miss Pattle's departure. Mr G. Rutherford, of Wairero, suitably responded for Miss Pattle. Mr G. H. Ralph, tho newly-appointed teacher, who was present at the function, and who is a talented musician, rendered ii pianoforte solo, which was greatly appreciated. The death occurred tho other day at Greytown of Mrs Colville; wife of Mr 'C G. Colville, 'who Avas in business in Masterton many years ago as a boolmaker. Deceased, Avho had been a long and patient sufferer from an internal complaint, was born'in Kilbride, Scotlaud, and had reached the age of 7i years. She came to Now Zealand in 1878. A husband, two sons and a daughter, are left to mourn their loss. It has been decided by the committee having in hand a .suitable recognition of the Hon. T. Y. Duncan's political services to make that gentleman a presentation on Thursday next, at" Oamnru. The Prime Minister has signified his intention of being present, as ha\'e ■also tho Hon. G. Petersen, a well-known settler of Mauriceville, died suddenly on Saturday last from heart, failure. The child had hern suffering from mumps, but heart fniiwre. Avhich supervened, Avas the aui'jC . of death. The Rev. .T. DaAvson, Secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, left for Sydney 'by the Tahiti on Saturday, inorder to attend the annual meeting of the New South Wales Alliance. He .will bo away for about a month.
