BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING

The ordinary Masterton Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers last evening, there being present: His Worship the Mavor (Mr J. M. Coradine), and Crs. H/j. O'Leary, F. W. Temple, J. Candy, J. Prentice, and A. Donald. An application was received from Thompson and Payne, picture proprietors, for a license to build an amusement hall in Queen Street. Cr. Candy moved and Cr. Temple seconded that the application toe granted. (Carried), i The Engineer's annual report was read and adopted. Tho Majpi, in supporting the motion for the adoption, spoke in very eulogistic terms of the work which Mr Archer had done during the year. Cr. O'Leary, in endorsing the report, stated that the Council was to be congratulated on the splendid harmony which existed between the Engineer at'-l tho Borough employees. Crs. Prentice jand jDonald also snrfnd in support of the report, which they considered very gratifying. Cr. Temple said that he considered that in the Engineer's report some reference should bo made to tho finan: cial position of the Borough, if only for tho purpose of comparison with the financial position of other years. It was resolved that the financial statement bo included in the Engin- 1 eer's report. The gas manager's monthly report »v.'is read and adopted. ' Cr. Temple thought that in . the Gas manager's annual report ther,e should be mention of the financial position of tho work's. Accounts amounting to £B3l 15s Id (General account, £292 lis 4d; Gas account £-339 is) were passed for payment.

In. referring to tlie Local Government Bill, which had of late been a good deal discussed,'Cr. Temple moved that the Council procure a copy of-the proposed Bill for -the use of Councillors, as he considered it a matter every Councillor should be conversant with. The Mayor said that something would be done in this connection in the near future. He certainly thought that that governing bodies should have cer-' tain powers in connection with the le\'yi"g of rates. ■ He also thought that the public and the Press were apt to lose sight of such an important issue. If ho was returned for a further term of office, ho would be- prepared to go into the matter seriously. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mayor took occasion to thank the Councillors and Borough staff_ for the great assistance they had. give him during the vear in carrying out the work of the "Borough. He considered that the past year was the most pleasant he had experienced as Mayor of Masteilon, and whether he was returned for a further term or not he would look with pleasure upon the harmony which existed during the past vear in the Council. Cr/ Temple said that, as one of the oldest Councillors, he had pleasure in endorsing the Mayor's remarks, and he thought that the people of Masterton should be thankful to the Mayor for the way in which he had conducted the affairs'of the Borough during the past year, during which .a, great amount of really good work had been done. . " Crs. Q'Leary and Prentice also spoke of the pleasantness which, had existed during the year, and thanked the-Mayor for the assistance he had always given them on various matters of importance to the Council. The meeting then adjourned.
