During the year ended March 31st, ninety-six new gas services have been installed in the Borough of Masterton.
About 150 tons of coke have been sold from the Masterton Municipal | gasworks during tho month of March. At the annual meeting of householders of the West Taratahi school on Monday evening, the. Chairman, Mr D H. Wiltpji, stated that tho bal-ance-sheet showed a deficit of £G odd (the first deficit shown in eighteen years) owing to heavy expenditure on the school grounds, £2O haying been spent during tho year. The Education Board had been written to urging the erection of a residence on the school grounds, but no reply, had so far been received. General satisfaction was expressed at the tone of the Inspector's report on the conduct and progress of •the school, which shows an increasing roll. Last quarter the average attendance was 23, which is the number of pupils on the roll, constituting possibly a record in school attendance. The cost of the railway line from Gisborno to Otoko has been £356,103* As the distance is 31$ miles, that gives" av, average cost per mile of £11,305. In the ease of the Otoko section the cost has been highest for this stretch, which extends for seven, miles 67 chains, and involved an expenditure of £130,000. At a large meeting of householders at Waimate,„it was unanimously decided to recommend the School Committee to discontinue the giving of attendance prizes, on the grounds that the children's health was endangered by the inordinate spirit of rivalry engendered. The headmaster heartily approved the recommendation.
