It lis satisfactory to know that the Mayoral chair of Mtu-tei-ton is this year, to he contested, though it is unfortunate that mien of leisure are not placing their 'Services at the disposal of tflio ratepayers. There are quite a number of gentlemen with property interests who are living in retirement in the town, and if one of these could bo induced to take an active interest in civic matters, the community would derive a substantial benefit. The present occupant of the Mayoral ohair (has done excellent work for the town, although his mehods 'have not always been in keeping with the dignity of ithe position he lias iield. It is not in the interests of good government, ■however, that the Chief Magistracy should 'be held by one individual for a lengthy period.
