TRUST LANDS SCHOLARSHIPS

REPORT ADOPTED. \ At the meeting of the Masterton. Ti'utf 'land® Trust last evening, the | report cf the •scholarship -committee came up for further consideration. Air 0. E. Daniel], who at the previous meeting of the Board had moved. that the discussion on the report he postponed until the present meeting, stated that he -thought there was one ffaxilt to he found in connection with the allotment cf the scholarships. He considered that the Trust should have' the interests of the district surrounding at heart in the matter of education, and not cbnfiiK- their efforts, merely to the limited area contained in the Master-ton smaill farm area and Miasterton Borough. He ?id not think the Act :should he interpreted to mean (that the granting of scholarships was confined to a certain, limited area. In support of.'his' opinion Mr. Daniell moved that, inseatd of .scholarships being, confined.to those whose parents! or guardian® resided ,within the Mas-tei-ton small farm area and Borough of Master-ton ,they should be open to' those students, or holders, who attended any educational institution , within the mentioned area, bo as to 1 enable candidates from a w' ler district to qualify for the scholarships. Mr Jackson strongly supported Mr Darnell's motion, and expressed the opinion tha", in tilie matter of such an important object aa education, parodhiail'iism sliould be avoided, and because a boy resided a mile or two outside a definite area, that should wot deprive him of the benefits which were meant for those whose parents were not in a position to give them theladvantages of. a higher education, if they o desired it. Mr Pj-agnell thought, that the original arrangements should he adhered ■to, as in matters of this kind they must have some limit defined . It might seem a narrow view, but the Trust as a body had a fixed duty to perform for the people of Masterton, whom they represented, and to that duty they nrust . adhere, whatever their personal opinions might he. Mr E. G. Eton supported Mr Prag;nell', and considered that the arrangements as originally drawn up must he • continued. On the voice of the meeting, Mr Daniel's motion was lost. The scholarships committee's report was adopted as a whole, an the motion of Mr Eton, seconded by Mr Pragnell.
