THE DEFENCE ACT.
The .reply made',by the Hon. A. M. 'Myers, Minister'for .-Dafence, lo.th'e deputation which waited, upon him yesterday, was entirely satisfactory. The Minister .made it clear "that- the' Government intended rigidly on forcing the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act. Parliament is to be asked to amend the Act in tho direction of providing gome other penalty tjhan imprisonment, for failure to comply witlh tlie" law. Nobody will object to such an amendment, provided the penalty for default is. of a salutary nature. In tilie meantime/ the Government should allow the existing; law to .take its course...... The remission of -sentences' only serves to, : b'ring'th'e Legislature into'contempt.
