I The Presbyterian Assembly at Wan- || gamii passed aJ resolution, deprecate j ing the presence ot the new Native I Minister (Da- Buck) at the Mormon j Conference at Palmerston North. The I leading Mormon at the Conference I (Mr Rominey)'has taken exception- to the attitude of the Assembly. .'ln,an interview, he said that the.Mormons paid special attention to the Maori people because they saw that there was\work there left undone other denominations which they were now doing, and they could testify to_ a wonderful improvement in the lives of those Maoris' with whom they liad come in contact. Thousands amongst tlhem used neither alcohol, tobacco, tea or coffee, as, a result of Mocmon , teaching, and were, otherwise better men and women. They taught "the Maori to he honest, industrious and .temperate, and to worship God according to the dictates of the Scriptures ano the later revel-artitn..' Christian charity should have commenced this work,- and he would like to know to iwtott element in it.the Rev. Budd took exception. Hie Mormon 6huroh looked after its poor so" well . that •there were no poor Mormons, at any- \ rate no hungry Mormoiiis. There was an organisation within the church which helped all those of its- members who met with misfortune or needed help, and Mormons never a&ked for public ciliarity. Then they were deviating nearly £600,000 a year to educational purposes in the world wide missions, and it was out of this yearly fund that the £IO,OOO for the Agricultural' College being established in Hawke's Bay was forthcoming.
