LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
j-The- last act of tlie Ward Ministry was to arrange for the ccn.Vo.ning of a 1 conference of loc.il bodies, at a cost to the country of £IOOO, to consider lijlie Local Government Bill which' was circulated in the last session- of Parliament. This step is probahly being taken, with the concurrence of the Mackenzie Administration, and,' it ro-outd seem to imply that the first ■business of the next session of Parliament will bo local government reform. The calling of a conference of _ local ■bodies is a diplomatic act, for it will, remove the onus of the Bill from the Government itself. The last Local Government Bill whih went before a conference was so mutilated that it's author'did not recognise it, and it was gently dropped. Whether the new Bill -will meet with a better fate remains to be scon. It is certain that the measure which -the Ward , Government circulated will not see the Statute Book .without important modification.
