A five-roomed house in Lowell Sltreet, owned by J. G. Hill, ami occupied by Gavin Allan, Union, Secretary, wa,s destroyed by fire at 9.35 liast evening. Owing to. the absence r;f tilie water .supply, the ; Fire Brigade was umw.e to render assistance, ;an.d- everything was lost. Allan'|> isons, aged five and eight'years, were llihe only occupants of the house at time of the "outbreak. They had a narrow escape. A man. passing 'along an adjacent road heard the screams of tho children, and ran to the burning building just in time to effect a rescue. Mr Allan, senr., was 'aititefiTdiiiig the New Zealand 'Labour Party 'meeting, and his wife was away nursing in- th*' country. 'lhero is an insurance of £4O on the furniture in the South British office. There is a policy also on the house, but the particulars are not available.
