Mr Neil Campbell, who has been a trip to the Old Country, returned to Masterton last week, and is at present staying witih lis son, in Oolumba Road.
Mr James Mackenzie,. the new Sur-veyor-General, is a brother of the Premier-elect, tho Hon. T. Mackenzie. With Mr J. Straitchon, w J bo is now Under-Secretary of the Lands Department, they were boys together in Otago, and tihe youngest of them, Mr T. Mackenzie, is on the eve of taking *he highest position in New Zealand.

Mrs Thomas Wiggins, who died at her residence, luiratiwhiti Street, Greytown, on Friday evening, aged seventy-nine years, was born in ! County Cavan, Ireland, in 1833, and came to the Dominion thirty-three, years ago, and resided in Greytown for tlhirty years. She is survived by her Inisbfihd, two sons, and two .daughters. One of her daughters is Mrs J. Judd, of Kuripiini, Masterton. Sir Joseph Ward will tender his resignation, as Prime Minister to-day. At its meeting last evening, tho Committee of tho Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society placed on record its appreciation of the services tendered by Mr R. W. Robson, who has resigned his membership, as ho is leaving for Timaru.
Mr George Brown, J.P., one of the earliest sertlers of the Hutt Valley, died at Wellington on Sunday at Lhe age of seventy-two. The deceased arrived at Wellington with his parents in *• 1840. His father, the late Mr James Brown, owned the first hotel in the Upper Hutt—the "Shepherd's Inn.*' *btr Benjamin Burlaiul, w'lio was in business in Kaikoura for the past twenty years, died last week from heart failure.' Air Burland armed in Wellington in 1888, and acted as dispenser for some time to Mr George Mee, Lambton Quay. A London cable announces tho death of the Marquis of Hertford, wh" was born, in Dublin in 1843.
Carterton's new postmaster, Mr I). Sustins, has arrived, and took'over hi.-) -duties yesterday morning. Mr Alex. Ramsay loaves for H,n,sings on Wednesday next.
Tho staff of the Carterton Post Office assembled yesterday morning to bid farewell, to their chief, Mr Alex. Ramsay, who has been transferred to Hastings, also to bid welcome to Mr D. Sustins, Mr Ramsay's successor. Mr H. Miller, chief clerk, acting as spokos man, regretted Mr Ramsay's departure from the office after so long a time with them. The staff and he had always got on with the greatest friendliness and goodfelhrwslhip, .and now, on his departure, the staff wished him to accept some token of their regard for him. He asked Mr Ramsay's accepance of a set of gold sleeve links and a gold mounted fountain pen. -
