AMATEUR ATHLETICS

ON EASTER MONDAY . It is many years since a sports meeting has been held in Masterton on Easter' Monday, and the announcement of the annual sports of the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club, for that day, will be welcome news to all those in search of a real good day's sport. The programme, Avhich is advertised in another column, contains probably the most comprehensive list ci athletic events ever set down for competition at a sports meeting in Maistertpn. Special mention may be | made of a few events which are new to the Wairarapa. The one-mile and two-mile walks are sure to prove interesting, especially as some of New .Zealand's beat walkers will be competing. In the two-anile walk, .' D. j Cashman, of Wellington, the New Zealand three-mile champion, will endeavour to lower the twxAnile record, j It is quite possible that Harry Kerr, | the one-mile champion, may also be a competitor, in which, case a great contest will result. The pole vault is another event which will prove attractive, as some clever exponents of this branch of athletics.-will be competing. Sprinters are liberally catwed for with 75yds, 100 yds, 220 yds and 4.4oyds handicaps, and big fields are already assured. The distance runners have'even a better list, as a .five-mile Marathon race has been added by the com/mittee,' making a total of four distance events, including 880 yds, 1 mile, 2 mile, and 5 mile events. Hurdlers and jumpers will have the 120 yds, 440 yds hurdles, a high jump, a hop step and jump, and a long jump to claim their attention, and last but not least there is the ever popular relay race. The Club will entertain the visitors and local competitors after the sports at a smoke social, when the trophies won during the day will be presented. AU that is wanted to make the gathering the best yet held by this vigorous young Club is fine weather. Competitors' are reminded that entries close nexit Friday.
