A PRISONER SUICIDES

Amebaiion.) '■■■ "■: r '

A Dane named Axel Snertinge cpmmTtted suicide at'Mt. Eden Gaol last night. On February 26th, Snertinge was sentenced to nine years imprisonment and ten years reformatory treatment at Hamilton, for an assault at Frankton Junction, in which he attacked, ■with a knife, three men, one of whom subsequently died. There was nothing in the man"s demeanour in the gaol indicating a tendency to commit suicide. He was •seen at 8 o'clock last night by a warder in the usual way.

This morning, just before 7 o'clock, Snertinge was found, hanging by a hammock rope, dead. He had apparently got into the hammock, fastened the rope round his neck and jumped off, the effect being strangulation, though his neck was not broken. Th-» doctor stated that he had been dead some time.
