LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL
ITS EFFECT UttON RIVER BOARDS.
(By Telegraph — Press Association.) WtELiLINGTON, Last Night. The proposals embodied in the Local Government tßill are viewed with alarm by some members of* the Hutt River Board. Under the Act all River Boards would be abolished, and their powers vested in Provincial Councils. The chairman of the Hutt Board has explained that the river would be controlled by a body in Wellington. The ratepayers would prefer it to be controlled by men with local knowledge. The only way the Board can get out of the difficulty, would be to amalgamate with the Borough Council, which n not affected under the now scheme. To do this it is necessary to have a Bill passed through Parliament. The Board has agreed to communicate with all the River Bdards in the Dominion asking them to join in a protest against the proposals.
