AMUSEMENTS

THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES. There was a large attendance at the Foresters' Hall last evening, to witness a new series of pictures. All the films were of a pleasing description, and besides providing considerable enjoyment, a number were of educational value, tending to broaden the ideas, the views and the minds of the onlookers. In addition there was a happy collection of comics, which made the most serious of persons give vent to hearty laughter. There were two star pictures, via., "The Attack on the Gold Escort," an exciting story of the early days of Australia, and "Before Yorktown," a splendid American military drama. Much of interest was to be gathered from the him "Lignite Mines," an industrial subject \rf no little merit. Pathe's firm struck a oleasaat chord when they hit unon the idea of providing a living newspaper in the way oi: thenwell known popular gazettes. _ Last evening three of these were given—two dealing with happenings m sunscorched Australia, the other with picturesque. England, with all her troubles, strife, pleasure, and every day rush. Local flower growers were delighted with the magnificent display of blooms in the picture "Springtown Flowers.'" The dramas were all of a first-cass order. Ihese included, in addition' to those mentioned, "Field Marshal Vilhers, A Father's Heart," and others. The mirth rcrovokers were "Tontohm at the Circus," and "Mae's Suitors. Under the direction of Mr Reiliana Boyes, the orchestra accompanied the entertainment throughout the evenno- and added considerably to the night's enjoyment. This programme comprises a splendid collection, and fully merits the attendance of all picture natrons. The children's matinee will take place on Saturday afternon, at 2.30 o'clock.
