SANITATION OF MASTERTON.
It is very much to be deplored that the reputation of Masterton as a clean, wholesome and healthy community, should have been assailed by the publication of ex parte statements concerning its sanitary condition. These statements, had they been supported by the strongest of evidence, should not have been scattered broadcast throughout the country until the Borough Council or its officials have been afforded the fullest opportunity of investigating them. As it happens, the Sanitary inspector, who should know something of the condition of the town, asserts that the statements made are absolutely untrue. There may be individual cases, as pointed out by Councillor Donald, where the conditions should be investigated, and it is a very proper thing for a Councillor to draw attention to these matters. But to allow a report to gain currency that the town is in a dis-' graceful sanitary condition, when there isno justification for such a report, is to do an unwarrantable injustice to the whole community.
