THE NORTHERN APPROACH
QUESTION OF PAYMENT. At its meeting a fortnight ago, the Masterton Borough iCouncil passed a (resolution, declining to make a further contribution towards the cost of the northern approach work until it is ascertained what tlhe County Council intends doing in (the matter of widening the first bridge. The Clerk to the County Council informed his Council yesterday that he had replied that under the Governor's warrant the Borough Council was compelled to pay within thirty days of the making of a demand. The widening of the ibridge was not included in the original schedule. The Council confirmed the action of the clerk, and decided to inform the Borough Council that the terms of the warrant would be strictly adhered to. After this resolution was carried, a letter was (received from the Clerk-to the Borough Council, stating that his. Council was prepared to adhere to the terms of the Governor's warrant when it-he County Council had completed its contract, under the warrant. The chairman said that it had .been understood at a conference that the work to be done should be curtailed. Or Toogood said the only course open was to carry out the original terms of the contract.
Or Cameron -stated that the County Council had endeavoured, throughout the piece, to carry out the work in the best interests of the ratepayers. It -seemed as though the Borough Council was for time. After some discussion, it was decided that the Borough Council be informed that' the .progress payments hare nothing -to: do with the completion of. the work under the Governor's warrant. • ' ■ ' \
