ATTAINED BY AMUNDSEN FROM 14th to 17th DECEMBER, STATEMENT BY SIR E. SHACKLETON. (Received Last Night, 11.20 o'clock.) LONDON, March 8. The Daily Chronicle has published a Christiana "telegram, signed Amund. sen, stating that the South Pole was attained from 14th to 17th December. TBic Chronicle publishes Capt, Amundsen's story to-morrow. Sir E. Shackle-ton states that Amundsen's taking three days continuous observations at the Pole would enable hian safely to assume its posiion accurately. A flying snapshot was less reliable than a continuous series of observations. He discusses whether Captain Scott readied the pole before the 14th December . RETICENCE OF CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN. REFUSES TO MAKE A STATEMENT. (Received March 8, 9.30 a.m.) HOBART, March 8. Captain Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer, who went to the Antarctic over a year ago in an attempt to reach the South Pole, and who arrived here in the Fram yesterday afternoon, is reticent. He stated, however, that when he left Buenos Ayres, he went straight south to the ice, where on January 13th of last year he met Captain's Scott's Terra' Nova in the Bay of Whales. He made his base camp on the Ge.rat Ice Barrier, at longitude 164 West, and latitude 78 South. Here he remained with nine men while the Fram returned to Buenos Avres. Of the- work of the camp ho resolutely refused to speak. When- the i Pole was mentioned he became dumb, j He declined even to say on wnat , date he left the camp for Hobart. The report is not confirmed at Chris, tiaroa., as King Haakon has not received Capt. Amundsen's report.
