ADDRESS ON TAXATION

BY MR WITHY.

A public address was delivered in Murray's Mail last night on "The Working Man's Income Tax, graduated the wrong way." There was a good attendance, and considerable interest was shown in the subject. The speaker dealt at length on the inequitable system of taxation, showing that the average family, of four paid a high graduated tax by way of customs duty and advocated the removal of duties on all necessaries of life and the substitution of an increased Land Tax. Tho speaker spoke effectively, and elucidated the various points to the satisfaction of his auditors. iMr A. W. Hogg also addressed the meeting in support of the previous speaker's argument on the land question. s.Seyerak questions -were asked Mr Withy, and satisfactorily answered, and at the conclusion the following resolution was adopted:—"This meeting considers the excessive price of land and the increasing cost of living are opposed to the prosperity of the Dominion, and we call upon the Government to amend the incidence of taxation by abolishing all duties on food and other necessaries of life, and imposing a tax on land that will promote close settlement and cause large estates to be properly worked, occupied, and made productive." . Mr Withy announced his intention of returning to Masterton at an early date, to deliver another address.
