OBITUARY
MR A. C. SGRiMCEOUR. At 10.45 o'clock yesterday morning, death claimed one of Master ton's most widely known and respected citizens, in tile person of Mr Alexander Cameron Scrimgeour, proprietor of the Prince of Wales Private Hotel, at the age of 72. The deceased fxcntivnian lias been confined to his bod for the past ten days, and from the first little hops was held out for his recovery, and the end came peacefully yesterday morning. The late Mr Scrimgoour was a native of Methven, in Perthshire, Scotland, and sailed in the Rangoon for New Zealand in November, 1563, and arrived at 'Napier in <Jvine, 1864, after a very istormy passage. Mr Scrimgeour came to New Zealand under engagement to Mr Henry Russell, _of Mt. Herbert station, Hawke's Bay, and after spending a few years in farming pursuits, he commenced on his own account in the hotel business at- Waipuknrau, and ever since has been connected with the business, and has always ibeen iregarded as one of the most popular hotel proprietors in the North Island. ■Mr Scrimgeour came to Masterton eleven years ago, and for a number of years was the host of the Club Hotel, which ,under his management came to be looked upon as one of the best hotels in the Dominion, and when a few years ago he left Masterton for Waipawa, he received from, the business people of the town a token of the high esteem in which he was- held. The news of the late Mr ScrimgeouKs death will-be received' with extreme regret by a wide circle of friends throughout the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay, as during his many years' connection with the leading hotels in these districts, lie came to be looked upon as a man of the most sterling qualities. While in Hawke's Bay, Mr Scrimgeonr took an active part in Road Board /and County Council work, and for many years was a prominent member of the Waipawa County Council. He was also deeply interested in Fire Brigade work, and received numerous testimonials from Fire Boards throughout Hawke's Bay. Deceased leaves a widow and family of six. including one married daughter (Mrs Con'Vallance, of Wairoa), three single daughters and two sons; .two sisters (Mrs Gow and Mrs Baker), and one brother (Mr Peter Scrimgeour). All of the latter are residents of Waipawa, Hawke's Bay. The funeral takes place on Thursday afternoon, at 2.30 p.ito.
