SPORTING NOTES

(By "Also Started.") FIXTURES. March 7.—Whakataki Annual. March 0 and 7.—Dannovirke R.C. Autumn. March 13 and 1-I.—Napier Park E.G. Autumn. March 20 and 21.—Xclson J.C. Annual. March 28 and 29.—M.asterton B.C. Autumn.

The Wanganui Gup meeting was an unqualified .success from every standpoint, the weather on the second clay .being the only thing to mar two splendid days' sport. !i\lr Highdea ,'with £IOOO, headed the list of winning owners at Wanganui. Wairarapa sportsmen would ho gratified to hear of Mr J. O'Meara's. ■success with Kashion Plate in the Harrison Hack Handicap. Mr .O'Meara lias not liad a great share of success « f hue, and consequently the win wotikl be well received. Eriuengarde, by winning the Jackson Stakes in record time, must be classed as about the best two-year-old out this season. Miscal was heavily backed botli days at Wanganui, hut failed to gain a situation on either day. Miscal is engaged in the Dannevirko Cuj) with 6st 131b, and may make, up for Wanganui disappointments.

-Three bracketed combinations wen at Wanganui, Ermengarde being coupled with Boanerges, Aloha with Dirge, and Dearest with St. Petersburg, and in each case the combination started i'avourite. Bootle gained a runaway victory in the Farewell Handicap at Wangaivui, and returned a substantial dividend. Byron v.as hacked down to a very ■short price in this event, but could make no impression on the Birkenhead colt. A number of Masterton "sports" intend being 'present at the Dannovirke meeting this week.

j ' Good fields should face the starter } at the Dannevirke meeting. Strathcona and Golden Butterfly have been handicapped at list 51b and list respectively, in the Whakataki Cup, to bo run at Castlcpoint on Thursday. Obsono, who raced successfully a season or so ago in the Dominion, was prominent in the Newmarket Handicap at the home turn, but failed to sec the distance out. Obsono, in common with other JSTew- Zealand horses racing in Australia, has been I well taken care of by the handi- ■\ capper..

The stable presided over by R. J. •Mason ..lias not had much success of late. Byron was the only representative at Yvanganui, but he cannot, be considered a top-notoher. Elevator, by Elevation-Yellow Bird, is reported to be doing good work at Hastings. He is owned by Mr F. Armstrong, of Akitio, and will start in the juvenile events at the Dannevirke meeting. Sir Knox is having a comparatively easy time at present, but will be got ready for the Opaki meeting and (Easter meetings. ' The stewards of the Masterton Racing Olub met on Saturday last, and made final arrangements for the Club's autumn meeting, to be held on the 28th and 29th insts.
