CARTERTON NEWS

The secretary of the South Wairarapa Poultry Association ha-s been advised that July 17th and 18th lias been approved by the North Island Association as dates for their forthcoming show at Carterton.

Mr Wm. Oates, a son of Mr Joseph Oates. of Waihakeke, died in the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday .following an operation. Mir Oates entered the hospital some ten. days ago. His funeral takes place at Carterton to-day. Mrs Miller, senr., of West Taratahi, had the misfortune to have her arm broken above the elbow on Friday. Being advanced in years, Mrs Miller does not find it convenient in alighting from a vehicle, and it was in the act of doing so that she caught her arm in the trap, with the above result.

On Thursday, two competitions under the auspices of the local Swimming Club will be contested at the local baths. Handicaps for the events are : Fifty yards handicap :S. Dudson sci'., L. Carmine lsec, G. West 2, E. V. Ellis, F. A. Deller, and G. Stevens 4, H. Wilson, C. Garvev, D. Robertson and E. B. Hall 7, J. B. Lawrence and T. Sevmour 8, R. Ellis 9, J. Grace 11, C. Corlett 14. H. Fairbrother 16. Fifty yards breast stroke: F. A. Deller scr., L. Carmine and E. V. Ellis 4secs'., G. Sievers, J. B. Lawrence. W. J. O'Meara and G. West o. J. Grace and R. Reid 8. The. Rev. C. J. and Mrs Armstrong and child left Carterton on Friday, en route for South Grafton, Australia, after having spent a two months' holiday in the North Island.

Mr H. Fairbrother, of the ironmongery department of the local branch of tlio W.F.C.A., leaves shortly on transfer to the Wellington branch.
