DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

C'ABLE_NEWS (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

BRISCOE S STORES DAMACE ESTIMATED AT £40,000. (.Received Last Night, 9.45 o'clock.) MELBOURNE. March 4. A fire broke out in Briscoe's threestorey building, which was erected only six months ago. The front part of the building, separated from tho rear, where the fire started, had fire proof doors, and escaped the flames, though an immense quantity of stock was damaged by water.

The firemen did splendid work in attempting to save the building, in the centre of a packed mass of buildings, and got the fire under in three hours.

The burning debris, carried to the adjoining buildings, started a fire in the Bank of New South Wales, which was soon subdued. Other buildings previously mentioned, besides Montgomery's cork warehouse, and a number of smaller business premises suffered from heat and water.

The collapse of Briscoe's wall damaged the Bank of New South Wales. Briscoe's business is not seriously inconvenienced, as they have another large store in West Melbourne. The damage is estimated at £40,000.
