'Mr F. J. Nathan has consented to allow himself to be nominated as i. candidate for the Palmerston North 'Mayoralty at the elections next month'. A social eyening was tendered to Mrs F. Dupro last night, when a number of. her friends met for the purpose of wishing her bon voyage. Miss B. Johnstone read an address expressive of the kindly feelings entertained towards the departing guest, and Miss K. Campbell presented her with a liandsome manicure set and a' volume of books. A number of those present contributed songs, recitations, etc., ' and a very pleasant evening was spent. Master William Terry, who -at the recent examinations matriculated and passed the senior Board scholarships, is at present undergoing a course ot study in electrical engineering in the Wellington Technical College. 4 very enjoyable "At home" was given bv Mrs Hendry, of Hogg Crescent- on Thursday afternoon, to extend a welcome to the Masterton Congregational Church, to the Rev. 1. G. and Mrs Butler. A large number of guests was present, and Mrs Green, on behalf of the ladies of the Congregational Church, welcomed Mr and Mrs Butler, in a few well-chosen words. During a pleasantly spent afternoon, musical items were given by Mrs Linton ot Perth, Western Australia, and Miss Lexie Green. The Rev. H. and Mrs Watson leave Masterton to-day for Wellington, en route to the Old Country. . Mr Arthur Spratt, in, the employ.of Messrs Krahagen >and Chapman, Mas-. torton, is leaving Wellington ; ne Xl week by the Rotorua. on a visit to England and the Continent. Mr J. Laurenson, a well-known settler of the Akitio district who had been, in a bad state of health for some time, died at the Pabiatua Hospital this week. It was seventy years ago yesterday since Mrs Samuel Maxton, of Greytown, landed in New Zealand. The pioneer is now eighty-five years ot age. The death is announced from Wancramii of Mr 'Field, senr,, father of Mr W. H. Field, ex-M.P. Mr Popham, a resident of Papawai, near Greytown, died suddenly yesterday morning from failure of the heart s action. Deceased, who was an old Crimean veteran, will be buried at Middlemarsh, Otago. .' ' » Mr W. J. Chaney, Chief Postmaster at Napier, who entered the service in Wellington in 1876, will retire on tlie 31st March. The Rev. Mr Ready has been elected President of the Methodist Conference for the ensuing year. The Rev ,b. <>• •Serpell, of Masterton, was a candidate for the position, and polled well. Tlie Rev. W. H. Speer, of Pahiatua, is reported to he seriously ill at Auckland. Mr P. Scrimgeour, of Kaikoura North, is at present on a visit to Masterton. Mr S. H. Ralph, of the W.F.C.A.. Masterton, is at present spending a holiday at Seatoun. The late Mr S. Champion, of Masterton-, had no relatives in this district, JuV brothers and sisters residing in Canterbury. ; Mr/Sam.
