WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tho whole of the members, with the exception of Mr W. C. Buchanan, 1 M.P., who was engaged in his Par- ' liamentary duties, were present at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board. The statement of finances showed a dsbit of £2593 9s Bd. This will bo more than covered by an amount due from the Government. The Government intimated that the special grant for the instruction of uncertificated teachers was being renewed. Eight teachers sent a signed letter, acknowledging the value of the instruction they had received at the Training College. The Department notified a grant of £295 for the Ivahautara Sdhool, £3lO for the Rongokokako School, and £204 for the Waterfalls residence. The Department intimated that tho question of inspecting the Mormon school at Pirinoa, near Featherston, was one for the Board. (Regulations in regard to epidemics were received from the Health Office, and ordered to be sent to the various schools iu the district. • ; It was reported that the Eketahuni District High School had been opened with an attendance of twenty-seven in the secondary class. The Inspector stated that Miss. Rowley, who had been appointed temporarily as mistress, had accepted a position in the Girls' High School, and another appointment to Eketahuna would be necessary. Authority was given the Inspector to arrange with the managers of tb© Masterton Technical School for art classes for teachers. An additional senior scholarship was granted to Miss Alice McCardle, of Palliatua. The resignation of Mr jR. Bell, assistant at Rongokokako, was accepted from February 29th, and that of Miss Rowley, assistant at Eketahuna, from March 31st.
Leave : of absence was granted to Mr H. Sutton, teacher at Tinui, for a month, and to Mr A. B. Charters, (Greytown), Mr D'. Robertson (Carterton), and Mr C. N. Haslam (Masterton), to enable them to attend the Territorial camp. " Leave o| absence was also granted to Miss Burgess, .assistant at Pafciatua, and Mrs Hugh ah, assistantaffc Peatherston. It wa« decided to call for applications for the -position of second assistant teacher at the Eketahima School. Teachers were selected for the folloHiing Wairarapa schools, and will be sent on to the respective Committees for final selection:— Cross* Creek, Pukehinau, Marima, Te Wha- | ran, Mahgatainoka, Lansdowne, Cooitoor, Korora. ftladstbue. Eketahuna, and- Masterton. The tender of Mr A. R. Power, at I £397 10s, was accepted for the erection of a teacher's residence at Alfredton. Mr T. S. Arcus.' tender was- • accepted for alterations and repairs to the Park vale School, and that of Mr Whittaker for additions to the residence at Waione and Puketoi, and • for repairs to the residence and school at Korora. The following grants were made to Wairarapa schools: — Newman, painting roof of school, £3 14-s; Ballance, fence repairs, £18; Kakariki, repairs roof, chimney, etc., £l9 ss; Alfredton, fencing renewal, £37 10s; Parkvale,- repairs and alterations, £42 7s; Mastarton side school, water service, £6 10s. Library subsidies r.ere granted as follows" Rongokokako, £1; Hukanui, £5; Waihakeke,. £1 lis 9d. It was reported'that "the residents of Hukanui had themselves subscribed -£l3 7s 6d towards the library. Nineteen applications Ave re received for the position of assistant teacher at Lansdowne. Four o-f these are to be sent on to the Committee for final selection.
