MINING CRISIS

CABLENEWS (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

BRIGHTER PROSPECTS MR ASQUITH'S 'MEDIATION. (Received Last Night, 10.10 o'clock.) LONDON, February 20. Tho newspapers .record brighter prospects in tho minting trouble. There isi a likelihood of the South Wales, Scotch, Durham and Northumberland owners falling into, line with the Federated Miners and. recognising tho minimum wage. There is much comment on the fact that Friday's negotiations were wasted. It is explained that the executive of the Minors' Federation told tho Hon. H. H. Asquith on Thursday that it was net empowered to confer until it consulted tho National Conference. A meeting was held on Saturday and Sunday to elect delegates to confer on Tuesday, when Mr Asquith is expected to address. a conference of leading Derbyshire owners. It is stated that the best chance of averting a strike- is for Mr Asquith on Tuesday to ask tlie miners to postpone the notices and to ask the owners to deal with abnormal places immediately, leaving the question of the minimum wage to lie negotiated afterwards. A movement against a strike has arisen amongst the Warwickshire miners. Another ballot will bo taken this week. GEHMAN MINERS. AND THE SYMPATHY STRIKE. (Received Last Night, 9.25 o'clock.)

BERLIN, February 2(5. Twenty meetings covering 3 0,000 miners, of the Ruhr coalfields, have resolved that the increase in wages is not sufficient to compensate for the increased cost of living, and have authorised the leaders to take steps to secure the concessions demanded. The Christian miners' manifest deprecates a sympathetic strike, both on political'and national grounds. The British miners, by their ambiguous attitude in coiu*ectioiv.witli. ; ihe.. German strike of 1905 were not deserving of support..
