BOMBARDMENT OF BEIRUT NUMEROUS LIVES LOST. (Received Last Night, 10.10 o'clock.) BEIRUT, February 26.
Shells bursting on tho quay killed and wounded many of tho crowd which had gathered to watch tho bombardment.
Tho casualties were duo to the splinters from ricocheting shells consequent on tho smallnoss of tho harbour. .. The mob, believing that tho landing of the Italians was imminent, seized tho rifles at the barracks and demanded the release, of prisoners. Tho police, frustrated tho attempt to release them, and martial law was proclaimed. Tho situation is now normal, ami Europeans are safe. Reinforcements of troops aro arriving. . Fifty men aboard tho Turkish battleship Avanillah aro missing. An additional thirty were killed, and one hundred wounded ashore. Tho Italian warships remained in the offing throughout the night. Six millions of French capital is invested in Beirut. The cruiser Amiral Charner has been ordered thither from Crete VIENNA, Fcbruray 2<j. The newspapers aro irritated at the Beirut bombardment. Tho Dieziet urges, the Powers to take steps to prevent a repetition. CONSTANTINOPLE, Feb. 26. Tho Council of Ministers discussed Italy's action, and decided to expel Italian subjects from Beinjfc Damascus, Jerusalem and Ahppo within fifteen days.
