Mrs Hughes, wife of Mr Charles Hughes, J.P., of Hastings, and formerly in business in this town, is at present a visitor to Master-ton. The death occurred at Wellington last night of Dr. Napier McLean, who was well-known in Masterton, lie having rcferecd at several of the local boxing tournaments. The deceased, who was forty-six years of age, was a victim of consumption. Mr H. S. Wardell, a very o:Id settler of the Wiaararapa, and formerly Stipendiary Magistrate in this district, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday.

Mr Charles Martcr, of the literary staff of th© Sydney Daily Telegraph, who is at present visiting New Zealand, resided in Masterton years ago with his parents, ibut was not engaged in journalism in this town. It wa% Mi' H. J. Tapperoll, who joined the New Zealand Times as a junior reporter in the days of Mr Chantrey Harris, who induced young Martcr to forsake his trade and enter the ranks of journalism.

Mr Armstrong, a journalist, formerly of Carterton and Opunake, who has irecehtyly purchased a newspaper at Mprrinsville, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday.-' : . ■, ■ ; ; ; ; : ;''' ■>-

Reason*.willhear with extreme rc- • death of their youngest son, Herberts, (better (known as "Bushy" Reardon, which occurred a 4 an early hour yesterday (morning, at his parent's residence in Perry Street, Masterton. Deceased, who was eighteen years of age, had been suffering for a considerate, time, but the, end was sudden and unexpected. Tho late Mr Reardon was a prominent member of the Wairarapa Hunt Club, and took an activo part in riding junipers at tho various-shows in. the North- Island, and scared a number, of wins on jumpers owned by Mr Rupert Morrison. Only two days ago he was photographed with Mr Morrison's j Grey Dawn, which .ho ixxlo successfully on several occasions. Tho deceased was very popular, and his death will be severely regretted by a wide circle of friends. Tho shock to the parent; is tho more severe on account of the fact that .this is tho third death which lias occurred in tho family during tho last few months. Tlio funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon.
