DESERTING THE SHIP.

»It is very unkind of- Sir Joseph Ward . and the Hon. J. A. Millar to offer to desert the helm of- the Liberal ship, go that; it may be saved from the rocks. They admit, by their action, that they have lost the confidence of the extremists in the House, if they have not lost' that of the country. That being so, it is reasonable to expect that the moderate Liberals .will consider their position. If the leaders of the Party hand over the reins of office to the extreme Radicals, who would nationalize every acre- of land as well as every industry, what is- to become of the freeholders? The position, as it is likely to develop, is de.cidely interesting. It looks as'though Sir Joseph Ward and Mr Millar anticipate defeat, and therefore are j withdrawing, with as much grace as possible, from a combination which . will abandon Liberalism in favour of (Radicalism.
