SIX PLAYERS FAIL TO ACCEPT,

OTHERS APPOINTED IN THEIR STEAD. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, February 22. The six players have failed to ao cept the Board of Control's invitation to join the team to tour England for the Triangular matches. S. E. Gregory, G. R. Hazlitt, and J. W. McLaren have been selected to replace V. Trumper, W. W. Armstrong, and A. Cotter. The other selections remain in abeyance.

(The remaining three players concerned are Clem. Hill, 11. Carter, V. Ransford.)

AX AWKWARD POSITION. FRUITLESS ATTEMPT AT SETTLEMENT. . (Received Last Night, 9 o'clock.) SYNDEY, February 22. During the early part cf the day, the Hon. Mr McGowen and Mr P. F. Warner fruitlessly tried to secure a settlement of the cricket trouble. Having only received the invitation on Saturday, the dissentient players have ten days' from then to consider their position. The other five of tlio have accepted, but nave reserved the right to withdraw if anything arose prior to tho departure of th© team rendering such withdrawal necessary. The Board of Control insists on a definite and unqualified acceptance. V; Hansford's place will be filled tomorrow. W. A. Carkeek now becomes first-wicket-keeper in place of H. Carter. H. Webster, of South Australia, will probably l>e chosen as second wicketkeeper. It is expected that Clem. Hill will decide to stand by the other malcontents. * , THE FIFTH TEST. COMMENCES TO-DAY. Tho Fifth and last Test match between the English touring team and Australia Will bo commenced on the Sydney .Cricket Ground to-day. As the! pei-sonnel of the.
