WAIRA RAP A CHI A M PI OXSHJP MATCHES. MORE RECORDS BROKEN. Wairarapa championship matches were coiuin.uccl on the Park Oval on Saturday. The heavy rain of the previous few" days deadened the pitches, and consequently they played rather slow. i However, the afternoon's play resulted in t«'o more Wairarapa records ■being broken in the senior match, Carlton v. Masterton. The latter team put up tli" tremendous score of 53-1 before the last wicket fell, easily breaking the Wairarapa. record, put up by the same team at Carterton some weeks back. | But this was not .all. W. Redmond's record individual score of 157 (also put up in ike match at Carterton), was broken by Logan knocking up j 102. This 'player is to be eongratulat- j 'eel upon his splendid effort, which, however, was not without luck. I Perry carried his- score of St not out
of the'former Saturday-to 110, before he way caught off Edwards. This play- ! or also played a masterly innings, being verv strong on the off. Edwards also finally dbposcd of Logan with a kM,- break.' Carlton, with slightly linden- aii hour and a half to p!ay, had ' a. good chance of playing out time and making a. draw, hut they made a very poor sho.ving 'before the bowling of Congdon and .Jordan, and were all out within ten minutes of time. Nine wickets went down for 50 odd runs, but the last wicket, Vallaiice and W. Hoar (a, junior), succeeded in bringing the score up to close on a hundred. A. Hoar played the best for the losers, batting very soundly, but was unfortunate in being bcv.vkd by a "shoot- (,;■"__.,. |,.<ii that would, have beaten anv batsman. N. Madsen- was also disposr-d of in the same way. Masterton Avon the match by a few hundred runs on the first innings'. Scores: MASTERTON.—First Innings. j T. Jordan, b K. Welch 32 j W. Redmond, 1> K. Carlton juniors also suffered defeat at the hands of .Mastertou on Saturday, to fch© extent of 74 runs. With, eight wickets down for 138, Masterton continued their second musings, but the last two wickets fell to C. Weloli : in the second over, without any addition to the score. O. Welch was easily the best'bowler, taking- four wickets .for 10 runs out of the score of 138. If this bowler !ha-d been used 'more, perhaps a very different tale would have to be told. As it was, he was only allowed five overs and bowled at three different times. The same j thing has occurred in other matches. At Mauriccville he bowled eight overs.i for three wickets and four runs, and was taken off. He is probably the fastest junior bowler, and while being well on the wicket with a good length, he also possesses a nasty leg swerve—a ball that is almost unplayable amongstjuniors, and has accounted for most of his wickets this season (27 at- a cost of four runs a piece.) Requiring 132 runs to win, Carlton started their task, with two men short, 1 but their last wicket fell with only 57 'runs up, after nearly two 'hours' play. Thompson bowled 13 overs for 25 .runs and 3 wickets, and Pryor 6 overs for five runs and one wicket. This latter bowler has this season taken 11 ,
wickets at a cost of only 17 runs, and ! heads the junior averages. Scores — MASTERTON.—First Innings, 74; Second innings, E, Prvor, b C. Welch, 5; L. Wixcn, lbw, b O. Welch, 0; W.
