In the present state of political parties, it would have been quite constitutional for the Opposition to have nominated another Speaker. Under such circumstances it is open to question whether Sir Arthur would have allowed himself to he nominated. As it happens, however, the Reform Party was quite satisfied with the present Speaker, and had other-good reasons "why -they did not desire: to': contest" his claims: The Government;'-.oir'the other hand, much'as it would have liked to add to its voting power, was compelled to nominate one of its own members as Speaker, or to resign.
