Some of the settlors endeavoured to utilise it in order to burn foiled bu'sJi, but owing to the greenness c f the undergrowth, very patchy burns resulted. On Thursday, as the gale freshened, log fires threatened to do damage, and the residence of Mr Harold llenall was for a time in danger. Fortunately, to- \ wards evening the wind abated, and during the night a steady rain set in. On Friday the wind changed to the i south, and rain fell heavily for 21 | hours. The line will reach as far as Mr Wall's, near the Ruamalianga bridge, and most of the settlers on the Mount Bruce road intend connecting their residences with it. Up to the present time the only link with the outer world has been the daily mail, and the establishment of a telephone connection will be a distinct boon to tho settlers. Mr Burton, senr., has had plans prepared for a commodious fer-ro-con-creto residence on his property, and the work of building is to be commenced in the- near future. Mr Alex. Falkner narrowly escaped serious injury on Thursday last, through the horse attached to his milk cart bolting.. The vehicle struck ; a stump, and Mr Falkner was thrown out and rather severely bruised. Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Saturday, when news of the death of Mrs Reading was received. The deceased lady was for many years a resident of this district, and her unasuming manner and kindly hospitality won for her hosts of friends. Very sincere sympathy is felt for Mr Reading in his sudden and sad bereavement.
