PAHIATUA SHOW
ANNUAL SHOW. (By Our Special Reporter.) Tk© third annual show of tho Pali* 1 iatua-Akitio Agricultural and Pastorj al Association was held on the So- ■ ciety's new grounds at Pahiatua yesj terday. Rain set in about 11 o'clock, when most of the country people were already present, but the townsj people did not attend in as large liumj bers as otherwise would have been the case. The takings at the gate were only a few pounds short of last 3 r ear, but would have considerably | exceeded this, if the weather had , been favourable. The appointments |on the new grounds were extremely well arranged, and compare favourably with those of any provincial Showgrounds in the Dominion. All arrangements in connection with the show were splendidly carried out by the secretary, Mr J. A. Walsh, who "deserves the greatest .credit for the way in which everything was conducted,' in very adversecircumstances. Mr J. C. Cooper acted as emergency judge of the walking competition. The entries in all classes were exceptionally large, and more especially in the. industrial sections, in .which over 800 entries were received, constituting a record for the Show, and which should compare more than favourably with any show in New Zealand. ~ , In the industrial section, Miss Talbot, of Masterton, acted as judge, and stated that the exhibits in cookery and preserves were the finest she had ever seen.
The sheep classes were well filled, breeders from Hawke's Bay, Man awatu and the Wairarapa being well represented, and some really fine sheep were exhibited. In Romney. rams, Mr R. Haliburton was the chief exhibitor, and scored principal honours, while in Romney ewes; Mr 0. Avery was the most successful.
In Lincolns, Mr H. Gaisford, of Dannevirke, showed some splendid types, and was awarded the three first prizes offered in this class. In Lincoln ewes, Mr O. Avery was the chief prize-winner, and his exhibits were of a very high class. The exhibits of. fa.t sheep were equal to anything in New Zealand, and many good judges consider that this section. was the- finest they had seen,, The honours; ia. this class were divided bettween Messrs A. McKay, • ■oii- A.vpvy, MoDifrwell-> >and' B. ;.;HatHaw'£i.y., -The 'feature of the show was unr | douibtedTy the splendid show of dairy ; cattle ,of which there was; a very ! large entry. In this- class the Hoi"steins and Jerseys were of a quality hard to equal in any part of the country. In Jerseys, Mr A. E. Booth, of Carterton, 'scooped the pool," gain—-; ing the first prize in all four classes. ; ,
In Holsteins, Mr W. H. Bayliss, of Mangatainoka, was the principal prize-winner, gaining three first prizes. • Por dairy heifers in milk,. Messrs. W. H. Bayliss and M: Alpass divided honours, while Messrs McGovern Bros, gained first honours for the best dairy cow. There was a large entry of in the various events, and some very interesting contests were witnessed. * 4 The ponies hacks were of a very good class, and many of them are good enough to appear in the bigger shows of the Dominion. '; The light-weight hack event was won by Mr j. 11. McDonald's Aotea, who won at last year's Masterton show. The harness horses did not Toqk at their best, under the existing weather conditions, but some very good
types were shown. In the draught horses, Messrs C. Avery ap.d D. O'Brieft won the chief prizes, with animals of a very good class. •' '■ The jumping competitions brought out large fields, notwithstanding the fact that the ground was very sloppy and not a little dangerous. No haps, however, occurred, speaks well for the ability of the horses, although some of the bestknown candidates did not show their time* form. Results:— 1 Pony Jump (ponies not over 14.2) —Mr G.
