THEFT OF HATS

BERGMANN IN COURT. (By Telegraph — Fiess Association.) AUCKLAND;, Last Night. Htmd E. Bergmann, a wharf worker, was giving evidence in a court £ase a few days ago, when Detective (Powell identified the hat he (Bergonann.) carried in his hand as one of -six dozen which had disappeared •from. Hie steamer Maheno in December last. Bergfmann appeared before .the Court this morning, charged ■•with the theft of 68 felt hats, valued at £23, the property of the Mackay, •Logan, and Caldwell Company. The 3iats were a quality that could not •have been otherwise obtained in Auckland. Bergmann pleaded not guilty, but admitted that he got the four hats in the coal amongst the Maheno's cargo. He was committed for trial, bail being granted in one bond of £IOO, . and two sureties of £SO each.
