CONSTRUCTION OF BATTLESHIPS.
\Some time ago it- was announced tli'at Brazil had placed an order for the construction or two battleships with tlio United States. From a private communication just received by a Masterton resident, it would appear that before the United States ship-builders could get the order, they had to promise that all their laj test ideas in war vessels should be I placed by the Xavy Department a + the disposal of Brazil. Had this pro-
mi&e not been made, the order would most assuredly irave gone to Great Britain. The United States has therefore p:iid a pretty stiff price for its protective policy.
