RESULTS OF PROTECTION.
Writing to a friend in Mast-erton, the manager of a big commercial institution in Cincinatti, U.S.A., describes in heated language the extravagance and intemperance caused by the operation of 'the policy of Protection in the United States. He states that the net Jesuit of this "great and glorious policy" has been "a steady deterioration. in the. character and standard of living of the majority of those employed, and ah equal deterioration in the class which has grown wealthy from this assistance from the State. The/lower' strata has corrupted into the middle class, and the corruption, of the upper strata has been seriously impairing the principles of the .middle class from above.' 1 :
