A MERITED SENTENCE.
Njobody possessed of a sense of right, and wrong will do other than applaud Mr Justice Chapman for the sentence lie passed upon, the fiend who came before him yesterday, charged with brutally violating a tender child. Twenty years may seem a long term of imprisonment; but for such a cruel offence it is almost inadequate. It is alarming to hear, on the evidence of , the Judge himself, tliat these offences are becoming painfully frequent. It is to be hoped that the salutary sentence passed in this case will act as a deterrent.
