'ANews repoi'ter happened upon it' at Mahiroa, once the scene of one of the feu-siest whaling stations, when the pursuit of whales formed the only industry of the colony. It was found, on the. es,tate of Mir W, J. Honey field, at the back of the oi 'fields. The try-pot weighs half, a ton, and is'very;- : »iinil&r to thait found at Akaroa. Roughly speaking it is four feet across at its widest point, and about thirty inches deep. The two sides bulge barrel-like from top to bottom. The other two sides are flattened. The pot now performs the office of a. watering-trough for stock. Generations ago it saw service at the whaling station of Maturoa, run by t'ho redoubtable "Dicky Barrett," whose exploits are realistically depicted by a very old resident of Taramaki, Mr A. Hood, in a volume published in 1890 originally. A descendant of Barrett told a reporter that the try-pot was located at a. spot nearer the beach, and identical with the sight of :the old whaling station,. , . :
