STRIKE IN BRISBANE TO COMMENCE TO-DAY. FORTY-TWO UNIONS AFFECTED. (Recelived Last Night, 9.50 .o'clock.) SYDNEY, January 29. The' Tramway Employees' Union has vpted £IOO (to. the Brisbane strikers, and lias authorised a levy upon members until idie trouble is ended. BRISBANE, January 29. The Executive of the Combined Unions have issued a manifesto that stihey will do al! ,n their power to fully provide hospitals and benevolent institutions. They will not interfere with the •measures usually taken to safeguard the public such as sanitation, but al! other work,'Tn which forty-two Unions are represented to. be engaged, imis* cease work on Tuesday nignt.
i FIGHTING SPEECHES DELIVERED. (Received January 29, 8.45 a.m.) BRISBANE, January 29. After a procession through the streets a big demonstration was held in the Park, the Union leaders delivering fighting speeches, in favour of strikes. A conference representing 43 Unions last night resolved that the action of the Tramway Company in prohibiting badges constituted- an attack on Unionism, recognised under statute law, unless a satisfactory settlement was readied. In the meani time, a general cessation of work would 1 take place on Tuesday evening. i The result was greeted .with enI thusiasm.
1 A great crowd gathered outside the hall, and Mr Bowman, leader of the Labour party, addressed th emen. He said the fight was not alone for the tramwaymen, but for the whole Union movement. The Employers' Federation played a strong part in the trouble, and the Unionists were going to teach them that if they were going to stand b&Mnd the Tramway Company the Unionists, as a body, would also take a hand. .: . , ; .._ •_.-.. NEW HANDS SECURED. POWERHOUSE CEASES WORK. (Received January 29, 9.45 a.m.) , , BRISBANE, January 29. The Tramway Company lias secured altogether 85 new hands. | The engineers at the powerhouse [ ceased work last night.. Five hundred Italian foundrymen at Luxemburg struck owing to the masters deducting the men's contributions ; under the recently established invalidity" insurance scheme. They stormed the works and bombarded the police with bricks. The police fired <a volley, killing three and seriously wounding six ■rioters. !■ The soldiere restored'order.
