HEROIC MINERS.

Referring editorially to the fatal accident in the May Queen. Mine, the Thames Star states:— "The fatality that occurred, o*n Thursday in the ( May Queeu.mine was one of the most pathetic incidents that have occurred on the.Thames field since the day when- Messrs Hill and Casley were overcome and suffocated with gas in the Caledonian mine. But in the gloom that has overspread the district at the sudden termination of valuable lives, there appears the sunshine of gratification that those constituting the band of workers suddenly faced with a deadly, unseen, and insidious foe, acted as men. There was. no shirking, no complaining. Each man realised the danger, arid recognised his responsibilities." Wiheu the lights went oiit and the mien were enveloped in-*darkness, and faced with death, each man-acted as a hero. The regret at the loss of the two men will, we hope, be rendered ilws keen by that comrades galla-ntly risked- their lives to save the., others from death. 'lt ma'kesa fine plory, and we are proud ithat such men live in our midst. Each man considered it his duty to do what Hie could to rescue his comrade. The deeds of Messrs Crowley. Hei-ivel, James, and Alexander will live'long in the memory of the people, and we are not exaggerating when we say that such men are heroes, and that their efforts should, and will, be suitably recognised."
