"TOKA TU MOANA."
THE NEW BRIDGE. (By Tclnjraph—Press Association.) OARTIiutTON, Last Night. The new ferro-concrete bridge (702 ieet long) across the Ruamahanga River, between, Featherston and Mariinborough, which was completed last month at a cost of £8635, was opened for traffic to-day by the Minister for Public Works (Hon. R. McKenae). There was a large attendance, and a speech was made by Mr W« C. Buchanan, M.P. x The bridge iS the first structure .of the kind in the Dominion. Mrs A. D. McLeod, wife. of the Chairman of the Featlierston" County Council, cue the ribbon, and Mr Buchanan's motor car crossed .tJhe bridge, which was then tested by a traction, engine and loaded trucks of wool, weighing about 40 tons, standing on the centre, and' there was no apparent movement detected. The new bridge, request of the South Wairarapa Natives, will be known, as the "Toka Tu Moana, meaning "The rock that stands for ever."
