THE THIRD TEST MATCH. A SEVEN WICKETS'WIN. (Received Last Night, 8.20 o'clock.) ADELAIDE, January 17. Tho third test match was concluded to-day, and resulted in a win for the Englishmen by seven wickets. The weather was bright, and the wicket good. t Tho attendance was only 2000. Barnes arid Foster continued the bowling. In the former's first oyer Minnett was. easily caught at point without any addition to the score. —6 for 360.
I Ransford was next. After three runs had been added. Hordern softly returned the ball to Barnes, who took it with his left hand. —7 for 363. Matthews was next. He hatted cautiously like Ransford, whose thumb evidently'jarred him. .At 383 Douglas took tho. ball from Foster. Ransford; glancing him for '2, reached double figures in 41 minutes. Matthews' time was 32 minutes. Then the 'latter swung Barnes to the square-leg boundary. A series of singles brought up 400' in 427 minutes. With a new ball Foster went on again, vice Douglas, and Wool'ley bowled at the other end. At the luncheon adjournment the total was 422, Ransford 34, Marttfhews 29. Foster and Barnes resumed the bowling Runs came steadily, chiefly from Foster, wflio at 339 was replacea by Hiteh. In his second over, Matthews, who had made 39. was massed by Smith at .short stop. The fifth ball of the over beat Hansford. The lefthander batted soundly for 108 minutes in painful circumstances. It was a fine knock—B for 447. With Cotter in Matthews hit tour off each bowler. Cotter banged three foun in succession off Hitch, then Matthews was bowfedjiy. Barnes. He played a plucky innings for 114 minutes. Trumper limbed in and made a sin trie. Then Cotter was bowled. Requiring 109 runs to win, the Englishmen commenced their second innings, Hobbs and Rhodes opening to Cotter and Hordern. In the googlie bowler's second over, Hobbs went out leg before. —1 for 5. Gunn, the next man, was striotly defensive, but BJhodes was aggressive. Armstrong replaced Cotter and steadied the scoring... When Rhodes was 25 he was badly missed in the slips by Armstrong, off Hordern. Minnett bowled instead of Armstrong, and as Hordern was punished Matthews replaced him. Kelleway was also tried. Rhodes 50 and the century came in 95 minutes. With two more up Gunn was caught by Cotter off Kelleway. He batted 91 minutes and hit four fours.—2 for 102. Hearne gave Kelleway an easy return before the same player caught him at mid-on off Matthews. Mead then went in. Rhodes made the winning hit with a four to leg off matthews. Scores: —
