U.S. GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. (By Teletjiaph — I'rexs Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Herald's San Francisco correspondent states that, as the result of an interview between. President Taft and the. Oceanic Steamship Company representative, it is announced that the United States Government will pay a 'maiTsubsidy of two dollars a mile to the line to carry mails from San Francisco to New Zealand and Australia; via Honolulu and Pago Pago. This ensures tlie resumption of tl'ie San Francisco service by the Ventura 'aaid Sonoma, which are to be refitted as oil burners. It is expected the vessels will be ready in June.
