The Government has decided upon iiiicreasiing the pay of the men in the second division of tlie railway service. Authority for this increase was given in the last session of Parliament, but (the Cabinet, for reasons liest known to itself, did not rise to the occasion. The concessions now •
made have been fairly wrung out of Ministers. Most people will agree itihat nine shillings a day is- - little leaiough for a married man to live upon in these days. But, wlien Mr Massey gets to work and lops off extravagances, besides establishing 'oon'fidentoo 7h the count ry, there is some hope of the cost of living feeing appreciably reduceo.
