A TRAM FATALITY
MAN CRUSHED TO DEATH. (By Telegraph—l'ress Association./ Last Night. The New -Brighton gala yesterdav ended in a tragedy. A man named George Palethorpe, who was head Porter at Warner's Hotel, was ruin over iby a tram' in Sea View Road, and received such shocking injuries that he died in the hospital early this morning. George Willis l , boilerman, said lie visited inow Brighton on the previous day with deceased, about 9 p.m.. by tram. They kept, together all the time. They were going to catch the 10.40 p.m;. car on their return to Christehureh. T/itness boarded the car first, and Palethorpe made to get on the first trailer from the wrong side, while the tram was in motion: He got on the back step, of the trailer, and while leaning out' he struck a tram pole and was knocked between the first and second trailer. His arm and leg fell across the rail, and the end -trailer went over him. Witness jumped off the car and sang out for the tram to be stepped. -Palethorpe was- ..dragged some distance wiien, the car pulled up. Witness picked Palethorpe up, and took him to the footpath. Witness left him there, and went for a doctor, who bandaged him up, and he was taken- to the hospital. Palethorpe was quite sober. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased met his death from injuries received as the result of Iboardang a tram from the wrong side.
