HENNIKER HEATON SPEAKS
THE ONLY OBSTACLE

SYDNEY, January 11. Mr Henniker Heaton, in an interview, said that Sir Joseph Ward had been a great 'advocate of cheaper cables. Ho had never foiled to use a,ll tlhe eloquence -at Iris power, 'and had offered largo subsidies binding Now Zealand for a national cable. The deferred cable concession was too amusing to contemplate, when it was realised that there were sixteen cables between England and America, capable of carrying two hundred and twentyfive million words per annum, while only twenty-one million words were sent. Tit had been assorted, maid nob contradicted, that from six to ten of these lines were kept idle by a ring. Vested, interests was tiie obstacle in the way of shilling caWls.
