LAND DEBATE PROCEEDING. (Received January 10, 9.50 a.m.) HOB ART, January 10. During the unification debate 'Mr Fisher declared that the wealth was hampered at every turn. With refemce to the questtiou or
health, shipping and railways, the powers asked for at the last (referendum were the maximum need for the National Parliament to proteofc the interests of the wihole people. Even with tihom it would bo difficult to effectively deal with monopolies. Mr McGowen, Premier of Neve South Wales, made a strenuous defence of state rights, and said it would be dangerous to give the Com menwealth power bhalk would enable supreme authority to be exercised. After a long discussion with closed doons the conference officially announced that the unification motion was defeated by 19 votes to 6. A motion that the Federal Government own and control the railways was defeated by 19 to 3. The conference bias now entered on a debate on land taxation.
Several delegates contended that an exemption of £SOOO was too high. The debate is still proceeding.
