THE ENGINEER'S REPORT,
'The following report from the Engineer (Mr 1). McLaoMan) was rend at the- meeting of the Masterton County Ouncil yesterday: (/PA .'s. I RIDING — Repairs have been executed to the northern end of Matahiwi road. j Coote's '.Road metalling.—Contract \ No. 273. —The contractors inform mo that tiliey will be prepared to start the metalling contract this week. Northern Api roach.—'Contract No. 237.—Building two bridges. The Contractor reports tho contract complete and is ready for final inspection. Contract No. 238. Bridge Approaches. The earthwork approaches f to the bridges are now being conipleti ed, and the contractors intend to fm- {. is'b. other details of their work during the ensuing month. Wainga.wa to Campt Road. Timbei is to hand for rebuilding the bridge over the Waipipi stream, for which the concrete foundations have been kid for .somo time. The work will be proceeded with forthwith. TE WRIT! RIDING—
Weraiti and Robieson's roads.—Slip clearing and repairs to.above roads are being made. iMasterton-Waimata road. —The cop decking of tho Wangaehu bridgo is practically worn out, and I purpose having tho re-decking undertaken immediately.
WAIXUIOJRU RIDING— Lett's Road (Gvt. Gt. £so).—The most urgent work necessary on the ■above road is the bridging of a waterway immediately East of the Taiieru bridge. 'Hie Government grant, however, will not be sufficient to construct the proposed bridge culvert and to do the necessary formatibn to give access ■to same. I have nob made >a detailed survey of the site, but will do so before next meeting. Uriti Road (Govt. Gt £ for £) — Specifications have been approved for | the metalling of 90 chains, more 01; I less, on the above road. Top decking and temporary repairs have been effected to the "Wairor.ga bridge. bnairlogic-East Coasit road. —Drays aro on thfo ground to miako surface repairs to the Homewood Beaumauris section. Temporary repairs have been made to t-he foundations of two bridges on tilie Waikaraka-Homewood section. Contract No._ 272—Delivering £OOO cubic yards of metal. —The contractor ■has been on t'Jie ground for the xsfc week and is making fair progress. ; Msisterton-Waimata Road.—Contract No. 2/1.. —The contractor assumed me ho would start work early this week. Ho has experienced difficulty in getting labour. UPPER TAUERU RIDING—
Building additions to roadman s cottage. Contract No, 268. ine contactor will proceed with the work m the course of a week's time. alfredton riding ' \ Ifredton-Tinui Road. Contract \o 264.: 46 chains of formation auc culvei'ting. —'Good progress is being made with t!lie work. The timber feu culvei'ting is on t^, gr °™f' No 227: Barton's Line.--Contract JNo. 83 chains of metalling.—'Mio broken weather is accountable for small progress on this work. AUredton-Weber Road. —Te Hoe bridge (Govt Gt.)—ln accordance with the Roads Department's request I have submitted a proposal for bridging the Te Hoe stream with a 72-feet truss span. The proposal has been rejected, and the Department have submitted an approved plan for 61 feet truss and two 15 feet approach spans, making tlio total length of the bridge 94 feet. I have no objection to the amended 1 plans, but I think it will not be constructed so cheaply as the 71 feet
span. Timiber is on the ground for the construction of the bridge culvert on the .CJastle Hill Road. I will put the work in liand during next month. I purpose repairing the I\j Hoe stone fords by grouting the outlets with concrete. The wire has in many oases succumbed to erosi >n . ar.d the drifting oi large stones.
Timber is also to hand for i»v reconstruction of a culvert on ihe Hutewai Road.
