CHRISTOEUR/Ofl, Last Night.
A very .violent north-west gale blew in the city to-day, and; the gusts were exceptionally strong. The gale was at its height about nrod-da#, At Lancaster Park the roof of the stand on the east side of the ground was lifted bodily, and a, portion d&> posited on the i-oofs- of house© iit Wdlson's Road,. The larger portion was deposited in the,front part of a house, making a gaping hole in the roof, and smashing the .verandaih. Tlie damage is estimated at £1500; At Lyttelton, tlie squaflls' wei-e of extraordinary violence, raateinig a heavy in outer harbour, whirling a cloudy spray high in the air. H.M.S. Powerful, which is anchored iia the stream, caught the full force of tsue ; gale, and & ten o'clock wenit off to sea. The Governor was to have visited Y/ice-Admiral King-Hall, but hfc» vtsit was cancelled. The wind 1 has aibated somewhat, and there are indications of its* shifting to the southwest.
