Complete arrangements have been made by the Wairarapa Age for communicating the results of to-day's elections to the public at the earliest possible moment. As the results come to hand this evening they will l)e posted on the hoarding adjoining the Age office, which will be specially illuminated for the occasion. The full returns of 'both'licensing and electoral polls from all parts of the Dominion, will appear in the Age to-morrow morning.

Shearing was completed at Wairongomai, Lower Valley,, last week. The allowance of the Lord Mayoof Sydney has been increased from £IOOO to £ISOO per annum. Mr J. C. Boddington reports that the rainfall registered,tit the Uppei Plain for the 24 hours preceding t) a.m. on Wednesday was 6 points. The Hawke's Bay A. and P. Association has purchased 52 acres at Tomoana for show-grounds, at a. cost of £5500.

The Pahiatua Herald says that Mr S. Gird wood, has purchased a property in the Waikato through the agency of Mr Husband.

G. Williams, to Mr McCormack. Mr Oruickshank also has several cash purchasers negotiating'for good residential houses in Masterton at satisfactory prices. The Feilding A. and P. Association's eighth annual show is advertised to take place on February 6th. and 7th, 1912, and the prize list should prove interesting and attractive to ail breeders of stock. The prize money is on a very liberal scale, and there are also many valuable and handsome trophies, "several of which are to bo won outright. In part years litis Association lias not permitted stallions on the ground, but,for the nex£ show there'are" cash prices and certificates offered-for these-animals, A stack-building competition has been included, for which prizes of £lO are offered. A reward is offered for the recovery of a gent's Burbury overcoat, lost yesterday between Masterton and Castlepoint, v Mr A. Hendry, men's outfitter, Masterton, publishes a- testimonial (one of many) from, a country client, expressing satisfaction with a suit of clothes supplied by Mr Hendry. Two powerful Lux lights have been kindly supplied by, the Lux Company, of Wellington, for the purpose of illuminating the hoarding at the Ago office, on which the election returns are to be posted to-night.

The schools in the Mastcrton district vail observe a holiday to-day. A violent westerly gale was experienced in Masterton yesterday afternoon and evening. No serious age lias, however, been reported.

A committee of townsmen have offered to assist the police in bringing to book any persons detected throwing eggs or other missiles in Masterton to-night. It may be mentioned that the throwing of missiles is l an offence punishable by imprisonment. It is expected that the result of the polling at the main polling-place in Masterton will be made,..known by eight o'clock to-night. The complete results should be known by ten o'clock. Epidemics in schools have been, more frequent than usual this year in the Wellington district, and the average attendance generally is sure to be affected. The latest, outbreak is one of mumps in the Paliiatua School.

The young man, Patrick Keegan, who was found at the foot of a louder in the Gas Company's yards in an un-conscious-condition on Saturday last, died at the Wellington hospital yesterday morning. 'A well-attended prayer meeting of those desirous for the continuance of No-License in the Masterton electorate was held in the Methodist Church ! last night. The Rev. S. J. Serpelj I conducted the service, and otiher minI isters assisted.

The Wairoa Harbour-Boa-rd yesterday accepted the tender of C. F. Pulley for river improvement work. The cost will be £79,000. Mr Leslie H. Reynolds is the engineer. The work will be- commenced in March next.

Hi the Magistrate's Court at.Eltham yesterday, D. F. Patterson, charged with sending in a claim for enrolment containing a false statement on behalf of another person, was fined £2O and costs. Other electoral prosecutions are being heard. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Chib will open its season with' three events on the Masterton Park Lake this afternoon. As the events are named the "Hogg," "Sykes,*; and "Herbert" handicaps, interest will be added in the results. The first race takes place at 3 p.m.

An old man who has recently been' working in the Aohanga district was brought up at the Masterton Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs J. Brown and J. Fraser, J.P.'s, and committed to a mental hospital on the certificate of two local doctors.'

A Gisborne telegram states that' in the case of the Police v. Williams, confectioner, a charge of Sunday' trading, the Magistrate J}eld that the law did not allow the -gelling of soft drinks on Sundays. Defendant was convicted and fined a nominal amount.

Mr T. H. Davey, one of .the Government candidates for OhristEast, stated the other day. that he had known a case where a man owning £BOOO had been admitted to a ballot by the Caaterbury -Land Board, while a man with 'three strong boys, two strong girls, and a sturdy wife, were shut out. The Manawatu Standard says:— Much regret has been expressed by residents of the Ashhurst district : at the death of Mr Cotter, .-who was killed in the motor accident, near Masterton, on Saturday. Mr was a resident of that locality for-many years, and was the "father" of the Ashhurst Racing Club. From Grafton, N.S.W., we have the dimensions of a huge cedar tree, which measured 70ft in length and 30ft in girth, and so proved too big to be shifted, but as the log is estimated to contain from £BOO to £IOOO worth of timber, a sanvpit will probably, oe put alongside of it, and the timber cut to movable sizes. Roughly, there would be'about 47,250 superficial feet of timber in the log, and the weight would be about 67£ tons.

None of the seventeen homing pigcons liberated at Peranga (460 miles distant) yesterday reached Masterton up till last night. About 3.30 p.m. the club received a wire stating that ten of the birds were still flying around an the vicinity of Peranga, the thickness of the weather, no doubt, ivccounting for the difficulty they experienced in picking up their bearnigs.

On Tuesday a man named Archibald Buchanan, the proprietor of the* Ross Private Hotel in Vivian Street, Wellington, was' found at the back of the building with his throat cut. Lying on the floor beside him were a razor and a penknife, and from appearances Buchanan had used the razor on Himself. He was attended by, Dr. •Gibbes, and subsequently removed to •the hospital. Very little hope for his recovery is held out.

During the heavy thunderstorm last week (says the News), a peculiar, phenomenon was observed in the "Glensido" shearing shed at Gladstone. The storm commenced at a few minutes after eight in the morning when the shearers were just starting the run. There was a tremendous peal of thunder and a blindiug flash of lightning' which- played along: the main shafting in a. mbst-wierd ni/aither. A second flasli following the first caused the shearers .to, throw their machines .out.of gear and "clear' the board" with great expedition. After a. time another start was made, but the lightning again forced a- stop. After a time the storm passed oyer and shearing was'continued. The following night a remarkably.brilliant display of lightning illuminated the surrounding hills, while the thunder caused ail the stock to exhibit marked signs of uneasiness. GET A GOOD PIANO!
